I had a friend who was using the Chain Mail rules for a while until I convinced him that the "First Edition" had everything in ONE book . . . well three (Dungeon Master's Guide, Players Guide and Monster Manual). My first experience with D&D was with the module Keep on the Borderlands, which, if I remember correctly, was designed for the Basic Set. I remember not liking any of any of the "Basic" editions, because they were too simplified. For example, "dwarf" and "elf" were classes and you could only pick "lawful", "chaotic" or "neutral" for alignments. I was though forced to play them from 1980 to 1983 (I think) because the crowd I was with wouldn't buy the Advanced books. After that, I was running my own campaign (Faalor, The Lost Years!) with the Advanced books I got for Christmas, 1981!
